BROOCH |
||
Description |
English: A Roman copper alloy Colchester hinged Dolphin type brooch, probably dating to the period 75- 175 AD. The brooch has cylindrical wings which have open end and a vertical slot cut in their back at the middle of the brooch to accomodate a hinged pin. The front of each wings has a vertical incised line close to its terminal and a diagonal incised lines running from the bottom outside edge to the upper inside edge. The remains of a copper alloy pin hinged around a copper allo axis bar remain in the slot cut into the things. This has an expanded circular attachment loop from which it narrow before terminating in a rounded break. The pin is sub-rectangular in cross section. The bow projects from the front of the wings and narrows gradually down its length before terminating in an abraded transverse break. The front of the bow has a central ridge and an incised diagonal line, one to each of the wings which is copied at the top of the bow itself. The brooch is a medium green colour. The brooch is 42.7mm long, 21.3mm wide, 3.1mm thick and weighs 8.24 grams. Similar examples to this brooch illustrated by Hattat (2000: 302) No.921B, Mackreth (2011: 66) No. 2546 and by Bayley & Butcher (2004: 158), they suggest (ibid: 153) a Flavian date range for this type. Hattat describes these as Wilsford T-shaped brooches while Mackreth terms them Colchester derivative hinged brooches. All date this form to the end of the 1st century AD and the 2nd century. It is perhaps more apt to describe this as a T-shaped which Bayley and Butcher (2004:167) suggest dated to c. AD 75-150. |
