Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

A fragment of a Roman copper alloy trumpet brooch dating to the period of mid 1st to 2nd Century AD. The bow, pin and head are missing with an old break at the top.

The surviving portion of the bow is approximately D-shaped with a flate reverse and convex front and narrows down its surviving length, It has a plain squared off foot. The bow has moulded decoration consisting of a dome with accentuated by smaller domed knops similar to a pine cone. Below this there are three transverse raised collars.

On the back of the bow is a catchplate. This catchplate is sub-trapezoidal in shape with a curved upper edge, and a lower edge which is perpendicular to the foot. The catchplate's outer edge level curves over but then terminates in an old break.

The The brooch fragment is 32.2mm long, 7.9mm wide and weighs 3.75 grams.

Without the bow it is difficult to be certain of the brooch type as most are defined by the form of the head, missing in this example. Similar lower portions of bows are illustrated by Hattat (2000: 327) and Mackreth (2011: 67, Pl. 83-7) which are described as trumpet brooches (various sub types) dating to the 1st and 2nd century AD.
