Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

An incomplete Roman completely intact copper alloy initial -shaped brooch, dating to early 1st Century AD. One wing, the catchplate and pin are missing.

The brooch has one surviving cylindrical wing which may have been open ended. it would have had a vertical slot cut in their back at the middle of the brooch to accommodate a hinged pin now missing.

The bow projects from the front of the wings. It head is slightly higher than the top of the wings and somewhat bulbous being D-shaped in cross section with a flat back and convex front. It narrows gradually down its length ending in a rounded termination which may be the brooch's foot.

The brooch is a medium green colour and quite abraded.

The brooch is 35.5mm long, 25.8mm wide and weighs 16.0 grams.

Similar examples to this brooch illustrated by Hattat (2000: 302) No.402, Mackreth (2011: 64) No. 2314 and by Bayley & Butcher (2004: 158), they suggest (ibid: 153) a Flavian date range for this type. Hattat describes these as Wilsford T-shaped brooches while Mackreth terms them Colchester derivative hinged brooches. All date this form to the end of the 1st century AD and the 2nd century. It is perhaps more apt to describe this as a T-shaped which Bayley and Butcher (2004:167) suggest dated to c. AD 75-150.
