Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

A copper alloy Roman Polden Hill brooch dating to the mid 1st or 2nd Century AD. The pin, lower part of the bow and catchplate are missing.

The wings of the brooch survive to 24.2mm wide. They are cylindrical with oval perforated wing caps and have an open reverse. The wings have 3 moulded ridges on their front surfaces.

Within the wings are the remains of a copper alloy axis bar.

The bow of the brooch projects from the front of the wings and then narrows down its length ending in a break. The bow has a single decorative ridges running down its centre that thins down its length eventually merging with the front of the bow. The side of the bow are bordered by two collars along the region where it is meeting the wings and c.3.0mm further before turning inwards to meet the side of the bow.

The brooch is 24.2mm long, 25.5mm wide and weighs 5.62 grams.

Bayley & Butcher (2004: 149) note that the method of pin attachment seen on this example is characteristic of Polden Hill brooches. Similar examples are illustrated by Hattat (2000: 300) No.896 and Mackreth (2011: 53) No. 12954, 1585. Both of which share this definition. The latter two sources date this form to the end of the 1st to the late 2nd century.
