Title |
BROOCH |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete fragment of a Roman copper alloy brooch, probably from an early Roman Colchester derivative form. All that survives of the brooch is the lower portion of its bow, the foot and the catchplate. The bow of the brooch is D-shaped in cross section with a flat reverse and convex front. The bow is also narrow and narrows from its break to its plain, pointed and rounded foot. The bow is entirely plain. The catchplate of the brooch project c.8.0mm from the back of the bow and is sub-triangular in shape the upper edge curving to meet the back of the bow. The catchplate is flat barring its outer edge which curves over 180 degrees to create a groove in which the pin would have rested. The catchplate is also pierced by a triangular hole. Overall, the surviving fragment of brooch is 43.9mm long, 3.4mm wide and weighs 3.60 grams. The plainness of the fragment make it hard to be certain on the brooch's original form. However it is similar to that found on OXON-B86D14 which is a Polden Hill type brooch. Further similar examples of the same type are illustrated by Hattat (2000: 300) No.26 and Mackreth (2011: 52-53) No. 2060, 1731. This type of brooch is dated to c.AD 75-175 in both these sources. |
