Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

An incomplete Roman copper alloy Headstud Brooch dating to the 2nd Century AD, i.e. AD 75 - 200. It is missing its spring and pin.

The brooch's wings survive to 19.0mm wide and are concave in crescent shaped in cross section and would have held a coiled spring with projecting pin. The bow projects from the front of the wings and is D-shaped in cross section being convex on the front and flat on the back. It narrows down its length to an outward projecting circular foot with an incised vertical line.

The brooch has a longitudinal raised decoration of a series of lozenges and at the bottom(?) is a circular knop with an elongated open handle.

The brooch is 42.6mm long, 19.0mm wide, 19.6mm thick and weighs 9.47 grams.

Similar examples of this brooch are illustrated by Hattat (2000: 332) who defines these as headstud brooches dating to the 2nd century AD. Bayley and Butcher (2004:94-7,165-6) state that headstud brooches are from c. AD 75-175 with many different designs and from mostly bronze, with some being enamelled. Mackreth (2011) does not illustrate an exact parallel for this form although he descibes one (Mackreth 2011: Vol I, 106) which defines as a 3.c being a headstud brooch lacking enamel.
