Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

A copper alloy Roman Colchester Derivative brooch dating to c AD 100-200. The brooch is incomplete and all that remains is the wings and top of the bow. The fragment comprises wings with assymetrical decoration. On the right, the two sets of double raised transverse lines encircling the wing are at the centre next to the bow and half way along the wing, with a raised rib at the end of the wing. On the left, the double raised lines are next to the bow and next to the raised rib at the end. The wing on the right is 11.11mm in length and on the left is 9.73mm in length. The wings are pierced along their length with the pin attachment bar, there is evidence at the end of each br of the bar. In the centre of the wings is a cut out section which allowed the hinged pin to be attached to the bar. The decoration on the top of the wings has been worn flat or may possbly have been part of the design. The bow of the brooch curves forward from the wings and is decorated with vertical motifs. At the sides there is a raised rib which ran along the edge of each side of the bow, this is more prominent on one side than the other. In the centre there is a raised panel wth two wide ribs and a narrower centre rib whih have been decorated with transverse incisions. The back of the brooch is undecorated apart from the wings where the decorative lines continue around. The patina of he brooch is an orangey mid brown.
