Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

Complete Roman copper alloy headstud brooch dating to c. 75 to 200AD. The head of the brooch consists of two tubular wings, both of which have a rectangular front decorated with two vertical grooves. The circular loop extends from the upper edge of the head, and at the junction between the loop and the head is a raised and narrowed step which is decorated with a series of vertical incised lines. A small circular grooved ring with a ridge outside and a raised central dot is visible on the outer top of the bow, and forms the 'headstud'. The reverse of the head has an integral double cylindrical lug with an iron axis bar forming the hinge mechanism. A complete copper-alloy pin is still attached to the axis bar and has limited movement.

The bow tapers in width and has a central lonogitudinal ridge, which creates a pointed D-shaped cross-section. The foot of the bow consists of two circular collars, one slightly above the above. A complete triangular catchplate extends from the reverse of the foot and curls to the left when viewed from the reverse.
