Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

A copper alloy Roman Colchester Derivative brooch dating to c AD 75-125. The brooch is incomplete and all that remains is the lower part of the bow, the foot and a small part of the catchplate. The bow is decorated at the top with a raised plate which has three incised vertical grooves creating four ribs. The central groove appears to be undecorated, the two outer grooves have beading down the centre giving the impression of a zigzag line. The top plate narrows gradually, beneath the raised top plate the bow narrows more sharply to a small stepped foot which extends forward. The lower part of the bow has three transverse grooves creating two ribs across the brooch. These mark a chang in the curve of the bow which then becomes more vertical. The catchplate extends back from the centre of the bow. The back of the bow is undecorated. the patina is mid green with some brighter green patches. The brooch weighs 5.51g and measures 47.26mm in length, 10.84mm in width, 10.91mm in height (across the back of the catchplate to the curve of the bow) and 2.07mm in thickness.
