Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

A fragment of a Roman cast copper alloy brooch, perhaps Hod Hill type, dating to cAD43 - 75. It consists of the upper part of the bow and part of the head. The fragment is mainy a section of bow, 26.23mm in length, 11.85mm in width (across the remains of the head). It tapers from 9.59mm to 6.42mm from just below the head to the break. The bow is is flat on the underside but has chamferred edges on the upper side thus with a raised central section which may have been decorated but it is pitted and worn. There are signs of silvering or high tin content. All that remains of the head is a transverse ridge, projecting a little either side of the bow with an indication of pin slot in the central position. It weighs 2.26g.

The broken end is jagged but it may be that there was a central circular hole or bifurcation such as might be made to use the remnant as a nail cleaner.
