Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

Copper -alloy Roman Thealby brooch, missing most of the headloop, most of the catchplate and the pin. The short rectangular wings have two faint vertical ridges. Some iron corrosion on the reverse of the head suggests an iron axis bar. The top of the head has two stubs from a broken headloop; below this is an undecorated rectangular-section panel at the top of the bow. Below this the cross-section becomes D-shaped, and there is a hint of transverse grooving above two worn longitudinal grooves, probably zig-zag, which run down the centre of the bow to a pointed foot. A thin line on the reverse of the bow indicates the catchplate. The brooch is worn and now a little bent. 40mm long, weight 5.13g.

The Thealby brooch is a northern type which dates to the late 1st or 2nd century AD.
