Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman Polden Hill style Dolphin brooch dating from the later first to second century AD. The brooch has a this sub-circular sectioned bow with faint medial ridge at the head and possible three or more horizontal lines just above the fott as decoration. The head of the bow is curved and perforated to take the spring bar, which is intact. The arms of the brooch are wide and quite thick, being of crescentic form with 'end-caps' to hold the coiled spring in place. Nearly all of the spring is retained however the section for the pin is now missing. There are three vertical linear mouldings on the end of each arm. At the foot of the brooch the plain and undecorated catchplate is complete. Similar brooches are illustrated in Hattatt (2007:300) no. 896 or 1512. This type of brooch dates from c. AD 43-120.
