Title |
BROOCH |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman (AD 43-200) probably 'bow-and-fantail' brooch missing the bow, head, and pin. The curl of the catch plate remains. The brooch measures 22.74mm in length, 28.40mm wide, and weighs 6.61g. The fantail is triangular and connects at its upper point to a circular button or rosette. The brooch has an old break above this. The decoration on the front of the fantail consists of a triangular area enclosed by a raised border line at the base, with a spherical knop at each end, and a lower raised area on each side of the triangle with fine longitudinal lines along the edge.The central area which is thus enclosed contains a number of obscure lumpy knops - three which echo the shape of the triangle but which are different sizes and shapes, with a small central circular pellet. These may have held or enclosed another feature, now missing. The circular upper feature has a raised border set in a little from the edge, with the uderside showiing the same small incised striaght lines as the sides of the triangle, below. The raised border has a rough, possibly scalloped, edge. In the centre of the circle is a rough knop which again, may have had something attached to it. It suggests the attachment of the upper part of an Aesica brooch (see Hattatt p311 fig170). The diameter of the circle is 15.45mm.
The length of the break on the upper edge of this circular feature may be as long as 7.50mm, suggesting quite a wide bow.
The reverse of the brooch is flat and undecorated, with the catchplate still in place, attached at the base of the brooch and extending 9.32mm upwards. the curl is a little damaged at its outer, upper edge.
See Hattatt p315 fig 174 no 74 for a possibly similar brooch.
