Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

A copper alloy Iron Age or Roman strip bow brooch dating to c AD 25-75. The fragment comprises part of the bow and the catchplate (which is missing its catch). The brooch remant comprises a flat, thin strip of copper alloy which flares slightly towards the foot of the brooch and terminates in a curving corner at one side (the other corner is missing). On the back in the centre is the remnant of the catchplate. The brooch is decorated with vertical lines. There are incised lines along each side of the edge of the brooch which have then been punched medially with tiny diagonal lines. In the centre of the bow are three grooves and these have been decorated with similar diagonal slashes along the outer edges of the outer grooves. The back of the brooch is undecorated. The patina is a whitish turquoisey green. Cf Hattatt, R, 2007, A Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattatt's Ancient Brooches, Oxbow Books, Oxford p 319, fig 178, no 342.
