Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

A copper alloy Roman knee brooch dating to c AD 150-250. The brooch is incomplete and is missing its semicircular head and pin attachment mechanism as well as the pin. The brooch comprises a short bow (17.23mm) which curves convexly from the centre to the sides to create a dome shape. `Below the bow is a flat fan shaped section which flares out towards the foot of the brooch. The fan shape is decorated with an incised line following the shape of the edge. On the back of the fan is the catchplate. The back of the brooch is undecorated but there is a deep recess following the shape of the upper bow. Cf Hattatt, R, 2007, A Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattatt's Ancient Brooches, Oxbow Books, Oxford p 334, fig 193, no 1225.

DF Mackreth (2011 Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain, Vol 1 page 189) says this type of brooch with a vertical catchplate would be a British variety.
