Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

An Early Medieval copper alloy Small square-headed brooch with traces of gilding dating to c.AD 470-c525. The brooch has a rectangular head plate which is very worn and has lost its original edging, leaving only the raised central rectangle. This has been decoraed with chip carving inside a plain border and retains traces of gilding. The gently arched bow is carnated in front and flat behind. Any decoration has been worn away. The expanding foot tapers to towards a terminal that has been lost by an old break. It is decorated with two raised lines forming a lozenge shaped field with is filled with a solid lozenge in the centre. The reverse is undecorated. The worn square hinge is placed on the reverse of the head and the worn catch plate is behind the foot. Traces of iron staining remain around the hinge suggesting an iron pin which has now been lost.

This brooch can be dated to AD 470-550. A very similar example with the same decoration can be seen from Chatham Lines, Kent in Macgregor(1993) p 122 ref 14.6.

The brooch is 40.4mm long, 17.3mm wide, 1.6mm thick and weighs 6.97 grams.
