Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

An incomplete Roman copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 5, flat wing ends type, Western Group), cf. Mackreth 2011, 5.b4.Plate 50. The bow, which measures 11.18mm across immediately below the wings, exhibits a raised longitudinal ridge which forms a loop at the top of the wings. Either side of this, two short converging incised lines with corresponding ridges forming a 'v' shape but only about 10.5mm of the bar survive. The underside of the bow is flat and undecorated. See Hattatt p 301 no 382. Both wings are closed, with circular lugs, pierced to hold the axis bar in place, as is typical of Polden Hill type brooches. There are two sets of two ridges on each wing. On the bow there are signs of silvering.

It is missing the pin, most of the bow and the catchplate. It measures 17.41mm in length and weighs 9.01g. The wingspan is 29.44mm. The whole of the spring mechanism is present but there is much iron corrosion. The pin is missing.
