Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

An incomplete copper alloy Roman brooch, Colchester-derivative, dating to the period AD 43-100. The brooch has a peculiar spring mechanism, now missing. The left wing and the bow are old broken, the pin and the cathcplate are missing. The brooch measures 27.28mm in length, 27.59mm wingspan, 1.91mm in thick and weights 7.46g.

The head of the brooch is composed by two hollow wings the rear part of which is C-shaped in section and originally held the axis bar and the spring mechanism. Between the wings are two overlaid and pierced lugs, the one on the top is bigger than the other and extends into a decorative ridge going down to the bow.

The bow is D-shaped in section and extends from the front of the wings narrowing slightly. The junction point between bow and wings is marked by two samll ridges, both side of the bow. The reverse part is smooth and undecorated.

A similar brooch is illustraed in Bayley, J. and Butcher, S. (2004), p. 158, T92.
