Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

An incomplete Roman copper-alloy, Trumpet derivative type brooch, dating to AD 75-175. The head is semi-circular (20.90mm in width/diameter) in form and slightly convex, with a central spine running from just below a head loop and down the centre of the bow which is consequently sub-triangular in cross-section.The head has a stepped margin (2.30mm in depth on its outer edge which is decorated with very fine outwardly radiating lines. The head loop springs from this margin and is, itself, 7.36mm in diameter. The inside base of the head is taken up with the curl of the hinge. The pin spindle is in place and there is a slot for the pin itself but the pin is entirely missing. The central spine of the bow is interrupted by a decorative knop (the centre of which is 34.45mm below the head loop) but continues below it. The knop has a central horizontal ridge and two outer ridges which have a scalloped edge. It has an oval depression on the underside. There are two further horizontal ridges, one above and one below the knop itself. The brooch has broken at an early date, just below the knop.

The remains of the brooch are 38.20mm in length. The knop is 11.37mm in width, oval in shape, and 5.82mm in length (along the bow)

The brooch weighs 5.66g. It has a grey-green patina.

A very similar brooch has been recorded in Hattatt 2007 p326 fig185 no1436
