BROOCH |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy Early Medieval saucer brooch of early Anglo-Saxon date, c. 5th-6th centuries AD. The remains of the brooch consist of a discoidal body; it retains some portion of its raised angular outer circumferential rim but is otherwise flat. The outer surface of the brooch bears an elaborate raised design, beginning with a raised circle slightly inside of the raised circumferential rim, within which is a raised long cross pattee. Within each quadrant created by the long cross design is an 'open heart' motif, with a pellet in the centre of each heart.These motifs are all raised from the surface of the brooch and are a light greyish-green colour, with some thin gilding remaining. A small trace of gilding also survives in recessed areas. The reverse is undecorated, but the broken remains of the pin lug and the catchplate survive. The pin lug is a single lug, with a hole through the centre, now barely visible due to old damage. A fragment of the catchplate also survives as a semi-rectangular bar of copper-alloy. The pin lug and the catchplate have been arranged in a longitudinal alignment. No pin survives. The brooch measures 30.19mm diameter [maximum], 2.09mm thick at the rim, 3.42 mm thick at the centre and weighs 11.6 grams. An exact parallel for the brooch is recorded on the PAS database as: PUBLIC- 546A32 and found in the same field. Similar brooches (with different motifs) can be seen in Macgregor and Bolick, 1993. A further close parallel has been previously recorded onto the PAS database as SUSS-8C1187 and originates from Firle parish, which is in close proximity to this example's findspot. |
