Title |
BROOCH |
||
Description |
English: An almost complete Roman copper-alloy Colchester derivative, Harlow, double lug brooch, dating to AD 43 - 100. The wings are cylindrical and undecorated, these are hollow to house the incomplete spring pin, which terminates in an old break. The bow has a faceted hexagonal in plan and D-shaped in cross section and projects from the centre of the wings. The upper section tapers to a transverse ridged collar or knop. Below this the leg of the bow which is also D-shaped in cross section and is waisted with a flared foot. The bow of the brooch appears undecorated but this may be obscured by corrosion. At the rear of the foot is a small, hooked catchplate. Length: 40 mm |
