Title
BRACELET
Description
English:

An incomplete Roman copper-alloy bracelet dating to the period c.AD 275 - 400.

The surviving portion consists of a tube of copper that is hollow and now filled with loose soil material. This tube is broken at either end resulting in the loss of both terminals. The bracelet is decorated with incised grooves spiralling forming a continuous spiral around the tub giving the illusion that it is made from multiple wires. The spirals are slightly convex but otherwise the tube is semi-circular in cross section measuring 7.4mm from the outer to the inner surface and 5.8mm between the two side surfaces.

The bracelet is a dark green/brown colour and fairly abraded particularly on the surface that would have been outside of the arm.

Assuming the bracelet was circular it is possible to estimate the outside diameter of the bracelet to be 80mm and that 25% of this diameter remains. It is 55.7mm long and weighs 4.67 grams

No similar hollow bracelets could be found on the database at the time of writing this record, however it is very similar in form to a shale armlet illustrated by Crummy (1983, 37, No. 1556) found from a clay floor dating to between AD 275-400 (ibid 36). This is noted as imitating solid, not hollow, copper alloy cable armlets (ibid).
