Description
Français : Jacques Callot a réalisé cette gravure en 1627 lors de la béatification par le pape Urbain VIII des vingt-six chrétiens, en majorité japonais : six missionnaires franciscains, trois jésuites ainsi que dix-sept laïcs franciscains, martyrisés à Nagasaki le 5 février 1597. D’âges divers, on compte trois enfants parmi les victimes. En représailles de la campagne d’évangélisation au Japon, qui a débuté avec la mission de saint François-Xavier en 1549, et face au danger politique que représente le développement du christianisme au Japon, le shogun persécute les chrétiens et les chasse du territoire. La religion chrétienne est interdite. C’est dans ce contexte que les vingt-six chrétiens sont arrêtés et martyrisés.
