Description
Français : Le baron de La Hontan, agé de 17 ans à l’époque, est l’un des 200 militaires envoyés par Louis XIV pour soutenir la Nouvelle-France dans ses tentatives de soumettre les Iroquois des Grands Lacs. Il arrive à Québec en novembre 1683. Pendant ses dix années passées en Nouvelle-France, il observe, il découvre, il voyage et il écrit. La gravure représente une bataille entre Français et Iroquois pendant l’expédition militaire des troupes de Denonville. Elle exprime des relations tendues entre les colons et la population autochtone, considérée par les Européens comme des « sauvages ». L’auteur critique la façon dont les Amérindiens sont perçus par les Européens et laisse une description de la confusion qui régnait dans les troupes françaises pendant l’embuscade. - Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, mis en ligne sur Numelyo
