Description |
Français : Ces impressionnantes représentations témoignent des progrès réalisés depuis les premiers profils de côtes au 17e siècle. Celle du dessous montre un des glaciers (Waggonway ?) se jetant dans le fjord de Magdalene. Celle du dessus montre le cap Hakluit, véritable porte vers le Nord, et point de départ réel de cette expédition. Vieux rêve anglais, la route vers le Pacifique par le pôle Nord puis le détroit de Béring fait en effet l’objet de cette expédition en 1773. Il s’agit d’aller le plus au nord possible et de mieux connaître la navigabilité des mers arctiques. Si le Racehorse et le Carcass ne parviennent pas à percer la banquise, et ne dépassent pas le 81° Nord, l’expédition demeure une réussite pour les informations rapportées par le capitaine Phipps. - Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, mis en ligne sur Numelyo |
