Description
Français : Perdue dans le sud-est de l’océan Pacifique et découverte le dimanche de Pâques 1722 par le navigateur hollandais Jakob Roggeveen, l’île de Pâques est le lieu habité le plus isolé de la Terre. James Cook est le troisième Européen à aborder les rivages de Rapa Nui, de son nom polynésien, en mars 1774. William Hodges, peintre de paysages engagé par l’Amirauté comme artiste de bord, est frappé comme le reste de l’équipage par les alignements de moais, statues monumentales représentant les ancêtres divinisés des insulaires. A cette époque, un grand nombre d’entre eux sont déjà à terre, probablement en raison des nombreux séismes de cette zone tectonique. Dans une composition pré-romantique, Hodges les représente accompagnés d’un squelette, en écho à la découverte d’ossements sur les lieux par les marins, laissant croire par erreur à une fonction funéraire du site. - Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, mis en ligne sur Numelyo
