Français : Un siècle après les premiers voyages de Christophe Colomb, Théodore de Bry publie la première grande série d’images sur l’Amérique, encore appelée « Inde occidentale ». Cette série marque durablement les représentations européennes. À l’arrière-plan figure la flotte de C. Colomb dont l’équipage commence à débarquer, effrayant des indigènes dépeints comme des individus « naturels », nus. La rencontre proprement dite a lieu au premier plan. C. Colomb, vêtu comme un prince ayant autorité, reçoit les présents d’Indiens nus et soumis.
