Title |
BEF9A2 Probable Late Mesolithic tranchet axe |
||
Description |
English: Flint axe. Probable tranchet axe of Late Mesolithic date. Long, oval flaked axe with an oval cross section. Off-white flint with a heavy patina and orange iron staining. This object was unearthed many years ago and has been curated by the owners, hence its yellow-brown "mantlepiece" patina. The butt of the axe is tapered almost to a point. The axe is extensively flaked along both edges. The flakes are broad. The cutting edge is formed by similar broad flaking. The diagnostic transverse flake of a tranchet axe has been obscured by subsequent flaking or re-working. However, the overall size and form of the object is correct for such Late Mesolithic axes, leading to the identification it as a probable tranchet type. An alternative is that this is a small flaked axe of Neolithic date. Dimensions: 118.5 mm x 43 mm x 29.5 mm Weight: 146 g |
