Title
BEAD
Description
English:

A blue glass annular bead of uncertain date, potentially Iron Age to early medieval, c. 600 BC - AD 800. The bead is sub-circular in plan and sub-oval in cross section, with an of centre circular perforation. The glass is of an opaque dark blue, containing very abundant air bubbles, some of which break the surface, and with internal spiralling bands of yellow-green colouration visible when viewed under bright light. There is a conchoidal break struck from the perforation on one face.

Dimensions: diameter 22.9mm; diameter of perforation 7.5mm; thickness 11.8mm; weight 7.57g.

The colouration and presence of frequent air bubbles within the fabric of the glass would both suggest that the bead is potentially of some age, and more diagnostic beads of similar glass are dated to the late Iron Age and Roman periods. Guido (1978: 67-68) defines such beads as her type 6(iva), noting that they first appeared in the 6th century BC and continued in use until at least the 8th century AD. She notes that later examples were frequently poorly made, with surface striations that are not visible on this example.
