Summary

[edit]
Description

The British Aircraft Corporation One-Eleven, also known as the BAC-111, was a British short-range jet airliner used from the 1960's onwards. It was in competition with the French Sud Aviation Caravelle, Douglas DC-9 and later the Boeing 737.

It was moderately successful and 244 were made, first in the UK and later in Romania. They were in use by several airlines around the world.

One of the main customers was British European Airways (BEA), which became British Airways (BA) in 1974. BEA/BA insisted that several controls and cockpit instruments were changed for their aircraft in order to resemble their other similar aircraft (The Trident) in order to minimise crew training.

My photo is of one of the BA aircraft cockpits, now on view at the Museum of Flight near Edinburgh, Scotland.
