Das Urwald-Projekt 1995 startete der NABU bundesweit eine Kampagne zur Einrichtung großflächiger Waldschutzgebiete. Im Saarland zeigten diese Bemühungen Erfolg. Sie mündeten in dem Projekt "Urwald vor den Toren der Stadt", einem 1.011 ha großen Waldschutzgebiet, das vor den Toren der Landeshauptstadt Saarbrücken liegt. Es ist eingebettet in den 4.400 ha großen Saarkohlenwald. Dieser ist Teil der Waldachse, des grünen Rückgrats des Verdichtungsraums Saar. Das Projekt besitzt damit eine besondere stadtregionale Dimension – eine bundesweit einmalige Verknüpfung von künftigem Wildnisgebiet, Wald- und Stadtlandschaft, von potenziellem Urwald und Großstadt. Am 5. Mai 2002 unterzeichneten das Ministerium für Umwelt, NABU Saarland und SaarForst Landesbetrieb einen Partnerschaftsvertrag (Link) zum Urwaldprojekt. Im Rahmen dieser starken Partnerschaft sollen tragfähige Organisationsstrukturen und ein innovatives Kommunikationskonzept für das Urwaldprojekt auf den Weg gebracht werden. In einer Machbarkeitsstudie (Link) wurde das Projekt zur Vorbereitung eines Projektantrages bei der Deutschen Bundesstiftung Umwelt konkretisiert.
