DescriptionAynvaulCulturalFlag.png |
English: Intended to be a national/cultural flag for the Irish/Irish American diaspora ethnicities/nationalities that are present in New York's Long Island, NYC, Mid Hudson, Lower Tier, and Capitol Region Divisions as well as in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts that have retained or are trying to retain and revive their Irish identity such as language, culture, customs, and community regardless of how many generations in they may be; as well as those that wish to embrace and become a part of this identity but don't necessarily come from these communities and families. For the sake of simplicity and lack of better alternatives, 'Aynvaul' shall be coined and used for this particular regional and cultural identity in regards to this file, hence the file name.
Symbolism: Starting from the center out; the traditional sunburst symbol known by many names including Gal Gréine, Déo-Ghréine, Scal Ghréine and more represents our common Irish identity and many of our old roots and connections as well as a remembrance for those of our families that kept the traditions going to us; The dark green, like the green on the Irish Tricolor, represents Irish nationalism and the ancestral Gaelic tradition of our ancestors stemming all the way back to Celtic times; the single red stripe represents the love and family intended to represent the blood that connects us all and the anchorage to some of our traditions that family serves as well as blood spilled by the historical Irish brigades many of which came from our communities and our struggle to keep our identity in spite of the efforts of American, British, and Canadian to see an end to our Irish identity and language; the two black stripes represent the fertility of the earth and the night in which most of our traditional holidays like Samhain(Halloween) take place; and lastly the two white border stripes represent purity of the heart and soul as well as the dream of a peace for peaceful life for our children and descendants. |
