Title |
awl (dorsal) |
||
Description |
English: Flint awl or piercer, tear-shaped in plan and lozenge-shaped in profile and section, with unifacial retouch on all margins from the proximal end to the distal end of the dorsal face. The distal end has been worked into a narrow, squared-off terminal to pierce hides or other matter, and the sides could also have been used to cut through denser material.
The colour of the flint is a mottled light to dark grey, and there are patches of cortex remaining on the left side tof the ventral face, from the middle of the tool towards the distal end, which suggests the that the flake was derived from a local beach pebble. There is also an area of patination, with some gloss on the surface, which may have been caused by thermal alteration, or through use by perforating organics. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar awl or piercer on page 143, Fig.5.129, No.F156 which is dated to the Later Neolithic period. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar piercer on page 169, Fig.71, No.3, which is dated from the Later Neolithic period. |
