Title
Awl
Description
English: Probably an exhausted core which now looks like a heavy, chunky flake. Modified after use as a core to make an awl or piercer by retouching the right hand side towards a natural point. There is a notch on the left hand upper margin which has been worked, but the indentation on the right hand side is probably a natural formation and used to make the flake into an awl. The flake has a flat base.

The flint is a dense light/medium grey colour and was likely derived from a local beach pebble.

Butler [2005] illustrates a similar example on page 186, fig 76, No.2 which is dated to the late Neolithic.
