Summary
[edit]DescriptionAvra Valley (5620719335).jpg |
I am looking north from the western sector of Saguaro National Park. Typical Southern Arizona landscape - saguaros standing as far as I can see. The landscape is greener than usual, as I am visiting in early March 2010, after the wettest winter on record; I have never seen the Arizona desert this green before. The huts in the distance are part of the town of Marana, which has seen some recent developments as Tucson's northern bedroom community. Beyond Marana lies an airfield named Pinal County Airpark. The dry climate is conducive to storing and scrapping old, unneeded aircraft. Just as Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, and its AMARC, store and scrap military aircraft, Pinal County Airpark stores and scraps commercial aircraft. Its row of retired 747s can be seen easily from the I-10. In the distance is Picacho Peak, a key landmark for travelers between California and Texas. Picacho Peak was also the site of the westernmost battle of the Civil War, as Confederate soldiers came all the way out here in hopes of hooking up with sympathizers in Union-ruled, but Confederate-leaning Southern California; Union soldiers blocked their progress for good. Even to this day, the main rail line between California and Texas, not to mention I-10, go through Picacho Peak. In fact, Tucson's annexation to the US was precisely to allow land travel between California and Texas wholly on US soil. Although most of the US Southwest, including California, New Mexico, and Phoenix, was acquired in the aftermath of the Mexican-American War in 1848, the Tucson area, the most logical routing for the California-Texas corridor, remained in Mexican hands, so a peaceful transfer of territory was negotiated in the form of the 1853 Gadsden Purchase. |
