Summary
[edit]DescriptionAvenue near Hillesden - geograph.org.uk - 948116.jpg |
English: Avenue near Hillesden. This is the wide dead-straight tree and hedge lined avenue that runs east for 1.5km from the site of Hillesden House, and the hamlet of Hillesden, see 716269 to this spot. The avenue, which is part of the Hillesden Estate, is also a public footpath and is on the route of the Cross Bucks Way, see 946681.
There is a similar though far grander avenue leading to Stowe Park only 8km to the north, http://apps.buckscc.gov.uk/eforms/photolibrary/photoDetail.aspx?id=19557. Hillesden House, as the original manor house, no longer exists. In the Civil War it was a Royalist garrison and was besieged by Cromwell's troops in 1644 and destroyed. It was rebuilt soon after but was pulled down around 1810. |
