English: The "Avant Courier" Building (1 E. Main Street), in Bozeman, Montana.
Sources vary as to this structure's history. Some say it was built from 1880 to 1881, while others say it was built in 1879 and then significantly remodeled in 1881. At any rate, it housed the "Avant Courier" -- Bozeman's first newspaper, established in 1871. It merged with the "Gallatin County Republican" in 1904 to become the "Bozeman Courier". The "Bozeman Chronicle" began publishing in 1883 and bought the "Courier" in 1954. The building's facade has been significantly altered from its 1881 design, making it ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Although the building is located within the Main Street Historic District (listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 21, 1987), it is not a contributing property. |
