  1. ScienceSaturday - How do dunes move?

Unless it's spring or there is a weather front moving through, it's surprisingly calm here at Great Sand Dunes. When it is windy, winds are predominately from the southwest, blowing sand grains toward the mountains. Grains are packed more tightly on the windward side of each dune, sometimes forming ripple bedding.

As sand continues to migrate from the windward side, it deposits on the upper part of the leeward side, starting to increase the angle of the slope. However, the 'angle of repose' of a sand slope here can't exceed 34 degrees. The pressure will eventually cause a small avalanche to release down the leeward side of the dune, returning the slope to 34 degrees, and causing the dune to move slowly forward. At Great Sand Dunes, you can feel geological processes happening as you hike and slide down the sand!
