Rethvalfangst. Spæk tåges ombord. alle de verdenshave hvor spermacethvalen færdedes gjordes til fangstfelt. Nantucket og særlig New Bedford blev utrustningens centrer, og der blev i aarenes løp hentet uhyre kapitaler hjem fra de fjerne fangstfelter. De bedste og mest indbringende felter var havet omkring Azorerne og Gallapagosøerne, likesom den Bengalske bugt var et godt fangstfelt. I 1842 opgives amerikanernes fangstflaate til 594 fartøier, mens andre nationer ialt skal ha hat 230 fartøier. Fangsten kul- minerte for amerikanernes vedkommende i 1846, da deres flaate
