Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Auxiliary Unit operational base, Coleshill (2 of 4). The Auxiliary Unit operatives were recruited from veterans of the Great War and others who came to the attention of the recruiters as being bright and resourceful. They were then trained in the use of explosives, firearms and in unarmed combat. The units were underground in more senses than one. Because large country houses could be expected to be taken over by German occupying forces, underground bunkers or 'Operational Bases' were constructed in wooded areas close to such houses. The Coleshill Estate was the headquarters of the UK Auxiliary Unit organisation and had several such OBs. This is the second of four related images and shows the blast wall that would have protected the patrol in the operational base from a grenade dropped into it. Next image... 536489
