En 2020, Wouter Van der Veen, historien de l’art, découvre que cette vue est celle que peignit Van Gogh les derniers jours avant son suicide (tableau Racines d'arbres / Tree roots). Une étude complète, qui donna lieu à un documentaire audiovisuel, ne laisse aucun doute.
