Description
English: Winter-like weather dropped snow across much of the Alps in early November 2022, quickening the pulses of ski enthusiasts who look forward to flocking to high-altitude resorts. By November 4, ski resorts in Austria, Switzerland, and Italy were open while one resort in France was anticipating opening its slopes by November 19.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the glistening white-capped Alps of Austria (east) and Italy (west) on November 7. On October 30, only a dusting of snow sat atop the highest peaks of the Alps, but storm clouds moved in and left a heavy blanket of white by November 6. The gleaming autumn snow contrasts with the deep greens of Alpine forests and the light green of the agriculturally rich Po Valley of Italy.

This snowfall follows a warm and dry start to autumn, and, according to an article published online by Weathertoski, this is not a season-defining storm. The article states, “…with 10 to 30cm of sometimes quite windblown snow falling quite widely above 2500m, and a dusting to as low as 1200m in the northern Alps, it is certainly a sign that winter proper is not far away.”
