of secular architecture the imposingpalace of Wallenstein (p. 302) may be mentioned as a harbinger of the newstyle. Towards the end of the 17th cent, and in the 18th cent. Germanarchitects began to hold their own with the Italians. Among these AvereJ. B. Fischer von Erlach (pp. 23, 296) and the Franconian family ofDientzenhofer, the most distinguished member of which was Kilian Igna-tius (1690-1752), a pupil of Fischer (pp. 296, 300, 302). In the War ofthe Austrian Succession Prague was captured by the Bavarians, Saxons,and French in 1741 and by the Prussians in 1744. In the Seven YearsWar it was bombarded by the Prussians for two weeks in 1757, butwas relieved through the defeat of Frederick the Great at Kolin. UnderJoseph II. the city was united under one magistracy (1781). The Peaceof Prague (Aug. 23rd, 1866) put an end to the struggle between Prussiaand Austria for the hegemony of Germany. — Comp.
