andthe chateau of Tersatto (p. 537) take 3-4 hrs. To Abbazia, see p. 538. Fiume, Croat. Rieka, the Roman Tarsatica, and called in theMiddle Ages St. Veit am Flaum, the only seaport in Hungary,with 49,100 inhab. (Italians and Oroatians), lies picturesquely atthe N.E. end of the Bay of Quarnero. With its commune of72/3 sq. M., it forms a part of the lands of the Hungarian crownand is administered by a governor appointed by the king. The OldTown is thoroughly Italian in character. Along the Quarnerostretches the harbour, protected by the Molo Maria Teresa; on theW. are the Free Harbour and the Petroleum Harbour, and onthe E. is the Porto Baross, for the timber-trade. Among itsfactories are Whiteheads large torpedo-works (to the W. of thetown). Fiume is the shipping-port for thousands of emigrants from S.E.Europe to the United States. Tersatto, FIUME. &6. fioute. 537 Near the centre of the town lies the Piazza Dante (PI. D, 2),a little to the N. of the steamboat-quay. Thence we follow the Viadel Lido and the Via del Porto to the E. (with the Market Hall onthe right, PL 4) to the Piazza Ormeny (PI. D, 3), on the E. side ofwhich stands the Theatre (PI. 12). To the IS, of the theatre is thePiazza Scarpa (PL D,E, 2; see below), whence the Via San Bernardinoleads to the left (KT.W.) into the Old Town, with the Cathedral (PLE, 2), the oldest church in Fiume. The church of St. Veit (PL 11),to the N.W., an imitation of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice, wasbuilt in 1631. To the E. of the church a gateway opens on the ViaCalvario, which ascends in 230 steps to (10 min.) the Monte Cal-vario (PL E, 1), commanding a survey of the town and sea. Return-ing to the Piazza Scarpa (see above), we follow the Corso, the mainstreet of Fiume, which leads to the W.; on the right side of itstands the Torre Civica (PL 13). By passing
