Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Waltz and operetta composer Johann Strauss Jr. Lived here.

Johann Strauss II (October 25, 1825 – June 3, 1899), also known as Johann Strauss Jr., was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas. He composed over 500 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet. In his lifetime, he was known as "The Waltz King", and was largely then responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century.

In 1867 in this apartment, Johann Strauss composed the world-famous waltz "The Blue Danube", Austria's "unofficial national anthem"! Strauss lived here for seven years.

His own instruments, furniture and paintings illustrate Strauss's work as a composer, musician and conductor, but the whole presentation brings Strauss close to us in private as well, a man who married three times, an enthusiast at billiards and cards, and a caricaturist.
