Summary

[edit]
Description

Photographs (possibly copies of postcards), depicting the establishment of a burial ground and memorial. Once a totally wooded area, this area at Polygon Wood, Belgium was completely destroyed in 1917 following the battles of Ypres on the Somme.

Polygon Wood Cemetery was made between August 1917 and April 1918, and used again in September 1918. A walled avenue leads from Polygon Wood Cemetery, to the Buttes New British Cemetery. There are 2,108 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War buried or commemorated in Buttes New British Cemetery.

The Australian 5th Division Memorial is sited at the crown of the wartime Butte and was designed by Sir Talbot Hobbs, a pre-war architect who served with Australian forces.

The wood surrounding the memorial and cemeteries contains to this day well-preserved concrete shelters (built and used by both sides).
