Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Austinite
Locality: Ojuela Mine, Mapimí, Municipio de Mapimí, Durango, Mexico (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: small cabinet, 7.7 x 6.2 x 2.5 cm
Austinite (Cuprian)
One of the larger and finer quality pieces, with good surface area coverage, from the old stash of dealer/collectors Consie and Dalton Prince (Houston, TX). This was found a few flats of the most intensely-colored, sparkling austinite any of us had seen from Mexico. This material apparently came out in the 1970s and was still wrapped in the old newspapers, from when they stashed it away. I was stunned when I saw this - it has to be seen in person to get the true effect of the slight translucency combined with neon color and sugary lustre. It is not the biggest austinite crystals - these are druses layered in thick carpets - but it is surely the prettiest find I know of.
