Summary

[edit]
Description

Built 1951 as a standard Auster T.7 and used by No No 663 and later No 664 Air Observation Posts until July 1955. She then became one of two Austers modified to C.4 standard for use in the 1956 Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Modifications included a belly tank, larger tail surfaces, air-sea rescue beacon, general airframe lightening. She could also be fitted with skis or floats instead of wheels and was painted bright orange to improve visibility. The main expedition was from November 1956 to December 1957 during which time the two Austers flew support missions alongside a DHC3 Otter. Returned to the UK, she was withdrawn from use and used for exhibitions, joining local RAF collections at Colerne, Gaydon and Finningley before settling at St Athan in 1979. She moved to Cosford in 1989 and has since been refurbished. She is currently on display in Hangar 1 at the RAF Museum Cosford, Shropshire, UK.
