Summary
[edit]DescriptionAurora Theatre, East Aurora, New York - 20220927.jpg |
English: The Aurora Theatre, 673 Main Street, East Aurora, New York, September 2022. A work of the Buffalo-based architectural practice of North & Shelgren who constructed it on the site of the earlier Millard Fillmore Theatre, the Aurora eschews the florid Baroque style popular in theatre architecture of the period in favor of a much more simple and straightforward Neoclassical aesthetic with a distinct Colonial bent: note the exterior of dark red brick, broken pediment centrally placed along the roofline, Palladian window tucked behind the marquee on the second floor, and six-over-one sash windows on the side wings with carved spandrel panels underneath. The lobby contains a pair of murals painted by noted painter and illustrator Margaret Evans Price. Boasting a then-state-of-the-art design and equipped equally for motion pictures and live entertainment, the Aurora opened on June 2, 1925 with a screening of the Gloria Swanson comedy Madame Sans-Gêne. Unlike many small neighborhood single-screen movie houses that in the latter part of the 20th century found themselves unable to compete with newfangled suburban multiplexes, this East Aurora stalwart has soldiered on to the present day never having been closed or abandoned, or indeed strayed from its original purpose of presenting first-run mainstream films and the occasional musical or dramatic performance. |
