Description

Gold ore from the Miocene of Nevada, USA. (field of view ~4.0 centimeters across)

This remarkable rock is high-grade gold ore (actually, bonanza-grade gold ore) from the famous Sleeper Mine in Nevada. The non-gold portions of the rock are quartz-adularia rhyolite (some classify this as a latite). Native gold (Au) principally occurs in this rock as colloform bands. Gold also partially replaces breccia clasts and is disseminated in the matrix. Published research indicates that Sleeper Mine rocks represent an ancient epithermal gold deposit (= hot springs gold deposit), formed by volcanism during Basin & Range extensional tectonics.

Stratigraphy & age of host rock: Sleeper Rhyolite, uppermost Lower Miocene, 16.3-16.5 Ma

Age of gold mineralization: early Middle Miocene, 14.3 to 15.8 Ma

Locality: Sleeper Mine (Sleeper Open-Pit Mine), eastern side of Sod House Road, south of Rt. 140, northwestern margin of the Slumbering Hills, eastern margin of Desert Valley, northwest of the town of Winnemucca, central Humboldt County, northern Nevada, USA (section 21, T40N, R35E; 41° 20’ 24” North latitude, 118° 02” 58” West longitude)
